Mobile Shelving

Mobile Shelving

Mobile Shelving is a term applied to shelving or storage units fitted with wheeled traction systems. The units can be close to each other when access is not required and can be readily moved to make a passage to allow access. By removing the need for a permanent open aisle between every unit, a lesser proportion of floor space is required for storage instead of traditional fixed shelving, or more storage can be met using the same floor space as fixed shelving.

It is mounted on a flat trackway making it possible to move heavy units with little effort. It can be done manually or by using electric motors. They come with a rotary handle on the outside accessible face. When rotated clockwise or anti-clockwise, it operates the mechanism which moves the filing unit left or right. Electrically powered shelving units normally have a small motor at the base that automatically moves the units when a single button is pressed.

This type of mobile aisle shelving is used where a large volume of physical files or books are to be stored. These maybe medical, academic, legal, accounting or government records for archiving purposes. Another common use is in retail stores to reduce the storage space required so that a larger part of the overall shop space can be used for customer retail purposes.
